Makapuʻu Point Light

Perched on the volcanic cliffs of Makapuʻu Point on Oʻahu’s southeastern tip, this lighthouse has guided mariners since 1909. It houses one of the largest hyper-radiant lenses in the United States, making it a landmark in lighthouse engineering. The automated light remains active today under Coast Guard operation.

The lighthouse grounds are closed to the public, but the paved Makapuʻu Point Lighthouse Trail offers stunning elevated views of the tower, coastline, and offshore islands. Early morning provides the best photography light, with the beacon framed against sunrise over the Pacific.

Nearby, visitors can spot humpback whales in winter, explore Sea Life Park, or walk down to Makapuʻu Beach’s famous bodysurf breaks.
