Kilauea Light

Perched on a dramatic volcanic cliff on Kauai’s northernmost point, Kilauea Light has guided mariners since 1913. Its original clamshell lens — one of the largest of its kind — made it a vital beacon for ships traveling between Hawaii and Asia. Decommissioned in 1976 and replaced by a smaller automated light, the historic tower is no longer open for climbing or interior tours. The lighthouse sits within the Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge, a premier spot for viewing nesting seabirds, Hawaiian monk seals, and humpback whales in winter. Sunset and golden hour offer the best photography conditions, with sweeping ocean views framing the iconic tower. The refuge charges a small entrance fee.
