Tucked along the western shore of Lake Oahe in Walworth County, Swan Creek Recreation Area offers 106 acres of rolling prairie grassland meeting the Missouri River reservoir — one of the largest man-made lakes in the United States. This compact South Dakota state park punches above its weight, serving as a gateway to some of the best walleye and smallmouth bass fishing in the northern Great Plains.

The park’s landscape blends native mixed-grass prairie with scattered cottonwood groves that line the creek bottoms, creating sheltered spots for picnicking and wildlife watching. White-tailed deer, ring-necked pheasants, and sharp-tailed grouse are common sightings, and the lake’s shoreline draws migrating pelicans and cormorants through spring and fall.

Water access is the main draw here. A boat ramp provides direct entry to Lake Oahe’s vast open water, where anglers chase walleye, northern pike, and chinook salmon depending on the season.
