West Whitlock Recreation Area sits on the western shore of Lake Oahe in Potter County, South Dakota, where the Missouri River’s dammed waters create a sprawling reservoir stretching across the northern plains. Spanning 260 acres, this state park offers one of the best access points to Lake Oahe’s exceptional walleye, northern pike, and smallmouth bass fishing — the primary draw for most visitors.

The recreation area occupies a series of tree-lined peninsulas and sheltered coves, providing both wind protection and prime shoreline access that’s harder to find along Oahe’s more exposed stretches. A modern boat ramp makes launching easy, and anglers regularly pull trophy-sized walleye from the deeper channels nearby.

Beyond fishing, the park supports hiking along the rolling prairie bluffs above the lake, where views stretch for miles across the water and surrounding grasslands. Wildlife watchers can spot white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, and sharp-tailed grouse in the surrounding habitat. The wide-open skies make for remarkable sunsets over the reservoir.

Camping facilities include both modern and primitive sites, with electrical hookups available for RVs and open tent sites closer to the water. The campground stays relatively uncrowded compared to the east-side parks, giving visitors a quieter experience even during peak summer months.

The best time to visit runs from late May through September, with June and early July delivering peak fishing conditions.
