Tucked into the glacial lake country of Day County, Pickerel Lake Recreation Area sits along the shores of one of South Dakota’s deepest natural lakes. At 368 acres, the park wraps around Pickerel Lake’s remarkably clear waters — a rarity in the prairie pothole region that makes it a standout destination for swimming, fishing, and kayaking.

The lake itself is the main draw. Fed by underground springs, Pickerel Lake maintains excellent water clarity and supports a healthy population of walleye, northern pike, and perch. Anglers work the deeper waters from boats while families wade the sandy swimming beach near the main day-use area. A boat ramp provides easy access for motorized and non-motorized watercraft alike.

Beyond the water, the recreation area features hiking trails that wind through native grasslands and wooded coulees, offering surprisingly varied terrain for the northeastern South Dakota landscape. Birdwatchers will find plenty to watch — the surrounding wetlands attract migrating waterfowl, pelicans, and shorebirds throughout the warmer months.

The park offers both modern and primitive camping options, with sites nestled among mature trees that provide welcome shade during summer. Electric hookups are available at select sites, and a small shelter is on hand for group gatherings.

Visit between late May and September for the best conditions. Summer weekends draw local families, but midweek visits remain uncrowded. Fall brings cooler temperatures, quieter shores, and some of the best fishing of the year as walleye move into shallower water before ice-up.
