Roy Lake State Park sits on the shores of its namesake glacial lake in Marshall County, South Dakota, offering 560 acres of rolling prairie hills, wooded shoreline, and clear water in the state’s northeast corner. The lake itself is the main draw — a 900-acre body of water fed by natural springs that stays surprisingly clean and inviting through the summer months.

Fishing is a year-round pursuit here, with walleye, northern pike, perch, and bluegill keeping anglers busy whether they’re casting from the shore, trolling by boat, or drilling through winter ice. A public boat ramp and fish cleaning station make access easy. Swimming is excellent from the sandy beach area, and the calm waters suit kayaking and canoeing for paddlers of all skill levels.

The park’s campground includes both modern and primitive sites tucked among mature trees near the lakeshore. Electrical hookups are available for RV travelers, while tent campers can find more secluded spots with fire rings and picnic tables. A cabin is also available for those who prefer a roof overhead.

Hiking trails wind through native grasslands where white-tailed deer and various bird species are common sights. The open terrain makes this a particularly rewarding spot for birding during spring and fall migrations along the Prairie Pothole Region flyway.

Summer weekends from June through August are the busiest, but late May and September offer warm days, fewer crowds, and some of the best fishing of the year.
