Edisto Beach State Park

Tucked along South Carolina’s ACE Basin coast in Colleton County, Edisto Beach State Park offers 1,255 acres where maritime forest meets the Atlantic Ocean. This is one of the few places on the Eastern Seaboard where you can walk beneath towering palmetto trees draped in Spanish moss and step onto an uncrowded beach within minutes.

The park’s 1.6-mile stretch of beachfront is the main draw, with shell-hunting that rivals anywhere on the Southeast coast. The Scott Creek mudflats expose incredible finds at low tide — whelks, sand dollars, and occasional shark teeth that have washed in from offshore. Beyond the beach, the four-mile Spanish Mount Trail winds through a dense maritime forest past a 4,000-year-old shell midden left by Native Americans, one of the most accessible archaeological sites in the Lowcountry.

Kayaking and canoeing through the park’s tidal creeks provide close encounters with dolphins, ospreys, and the occasional bald eagle. Fishing is productive year-round from the beach or Big Bay Creek, where redfish and flounder run strong in the warmer months.

The campground sits under a canopy of live oaks, with sites split between oceanfront and marsh-side locations. The oceanfront spots book months in advance, especially for spring and fall stays — the sweet spot when temperatures hover in the 70s and humidity drops.

Edisto Beach State Park rewards the traveler looking for authentic Lowcountry coastline without the commercial sprawl of Myrtle Beach or Hilton Head.
