Charles Towne Landing State Historic Site marks the exact spot where English colonists established the first permanent European settlement in South Carolina in 1670. Spread across 184 acres along the Ashley River in Charleston County, this living-history site brings three centuries of lowcountry heritage to life in a way few parks can match.

The grounds feature a full-scale replica of a 17th-century trading vessel, the Adventure, docked along the river and open for exploration. A reconstructed fortified settlement shows how those earliest colonists lived, complete with crop gardens growing the same varieties they would have planted. The Animal Forest houses species native to the Carolina lowcountry in 1670—black bears, bison, pumas, river otters, and alligators roam naturalistic enclosures along a shaded trail.

Beyond the historical exhibits, the park offers miles of walking and biking trails winding through old-growth gardens, marshland, and moss-draped live oaks. Kayakers and canoeists can paddle the tidal creeks that thread through the property. The park’s interpretive programs and seasonal reenactments add depth for history-minded visitors.

Fall and spring deliver the most comfortable conditions for exploring—Charleston summers are famously hot and humid, and the park’s trails offer limited shade in some stretches. Winter visits are pleasant and uncrowded.

Charles Towne Landing works equally well as a half-day history excursion from downtown Charleston or a full afternoon of trail walking and wildlife viewing. It’s one of the most underappreciated sites in the South Carolina state park system.
