Standing guard over Charleston Harbor since 1855, this historic lighthouse helped guide vessels safely through one of America’s most storied waterways. Built during the tense years preceding the Civil War, the light witnessed the opening shots at nearby Fort Sumter that ignited the conflict. Still an active aid to navigation, the tower continues its original mission after more than 170 years of service.

The lighthouse is not open to the public, but photographers capture striking images from the Charleston waterfront, with golden hour and sunset offering the best light.
