Baker Creek State Park

Tucked along the shores of J. Strom Thurmond Lake in McCormick County, Baker Creek State Park spreads across 1,305 acres of rolling Piedmont terrain where pine forests meet open water. The park sits on one of the largest man-made lakes in the eastern United States, giving visitors direct access to miles of shoreline without the crowds found at more well-known lakeside destinations.

The lake is the main draw here. A public boat ramp puts anglers on the water quickly, and the fishing is strong — largemouth bass, striped bass, crappie, and catfish all thrive in Thurmond Lake’s deep, clear waters. Kayakers and canoeists will find sheltered coves worth exploring, especially in the early morning when the water is glass-still.

On land, hiking and biking trails wind through hardwood and pine forests. The terrain is gentle enough for families but long enough to feel like a real outing. Birders should keep their eyes open — the transition zone between forest and lake edge attracts a good variety of species, particularly during spring and fall migrations.

The park offers camping for those who want to stay the night, with sites set among the trees near the water’s edge.

Late spring through early fall is the prime season, with warm water temperatures ideal for swimming and boating. Autumn brings fewer visitors and some of the best fishing of the year, plus the Piedmont hardwoods put on a solid color display through October and November.
