Calhoun Falls State Park
South Carolina (Abbeville County)
About This Park
This recreation area is part of Richard B. Russell Lake
Tucked along the western shore of Lake Richard B. Russell in Abbeville County, Calhoun Falls State Park offers 318 acres of quiet lakeside retreat in South Carolina’s rural Upstate region. Unlike the state’s busier coastal and mountain parks, Calhoun Falls draws visitors who want unhurried access to one of the Southeast’s cleanest and least-developed lakes.
The park’s main draw is its direct shoreline access to Lake Russell, a 26,650-acre U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reservoir straddling the South Carolina-Georgia border. Fishing here is genuinely rewarding — the lake supports healthy populations of largemouth bass, striped bass, crappie, and catfish. A boat ramp provides easy launch access, and bank fishing spots are plentiful along the shoreline.
Beyond the water, the park features well-maintained hiking trails that wind through mixed hardwood and pine forest, offering a peaceful setting for birding and wildlife observation. Picnic shelters and a playground make it a solid choice for families looking for a low-key day trip.
The park operates campgrounds with both tent and RV sites, many offering lake views. Facilities are straightforward but well-kept — expect water and electric hookups rather than resort-style amenities.
Spring and fall deliver the best conditions: mild temperatures, lower humidity, and fewer crowds. Summer weekends bring local boaters and anglers but rarely feel overcrowded. Winter visits are quiet and cool, ideal for solitary hiking.
Calhoun Falls is a park for people who prefer their outdoor time simple, uncrowded, and close to the water.
