Arcadia Management Area
Rhode Island (Kent, Washington County)
Spanning 14,000 acres across Kent and Washington County, Arcadia Management Area is Rhode Island’s largest recreational area and one of New England’s most rewarding public lands. This sprawling tract of forest, rivers, and wetlands offers a genuine backcountry experience in a state better known for its coastline.
The Wood River and Falls River wind through the property, creating excellent opportunities for trout fishing, kayaking, and swimming at several natural swimming holes — Stepstone Falls being the most popular, where water cascades over a series of granite ledges into clear pools. Miles of trails crisscross the management area, welcoming hikers, mountain bikers, and horseback riders through mixed hardwood forests and past remnants of old mill sites that speak to Rhode Island’s industrial past.
Hunters frequent Arcadia during fall seasons for deer, turkey, and upland game, making blaze orange advisable during those months. The Arcadia Trail, part of the longer North South Trail that traverses the entire state, offers some of the best woodland hiking in Rhode Island with moderate terrain suitable for most ability levels.
Fall foliage season, typically mid-October, transforms the hardwood canopy into a spectacular display and draws the most visitors. Spring brings wildflowers and rushing streams fed by snowmelt, while summer is ideal for cooling off at the swimming holes.
Expect unmarked intersections and limited signage — a trail map is essential. Cell service is spotty in the interior. Parking areas are scattered along Route 165 and several access roads, with no entrance fees required.
