Jennings Environmental Education Center

Tucked into the rolling hills of Butler County, Jennings Environmental Education Center is a 300-acre living classroom that stands apart from Pennsylvania’s other state parks. Established in 1979, the center was created specifically to protect one of the state’s rarest ecosystems — a relict prairie grassland more commonly found hundreds of miles to the west. The star attraction is a blazing display of blazing star (Liatris spicata), a native prairie wildflower that erupts in purple spikes each August, drawing botanists and wildflower enthusiasts from across the region.

Beyond the prairie, the park’s compact acreage packs in surprisingly diverse habitats: old-growth forest remnants, wetlands, and meandering streams that support a rich variety of bird and plant life. Miles of well-maintained trails wind through these ecosystems, with interpretive signage that makes every hike an education. The on-site education center hosts programs year-round, from guided wildflower walks and bird counts to winter tracking workshops — making it an outstanding destination for families and school groups.

Birders will find the mix of grassland and woodland species rewarding, while photographers should time visits for late July through mid-August when the blazing star is at peak bloom. Fall brings vivid foliage along the forest trails, and winter offers quiet solitude for snowshoeing and animal tracking.
