Elk State Park
Pennsylvania (Elk and McKean Counties County)
Elk State Park spans 3,192 acres across Elk and McKean Counties in north-central Pennsylvania, sitting at the heart of the Pennsylvania Wilds — the largest wild area in the eastern United States. Established in 1963, the park was built around the East Branch Lake, a 1,160-acre reservoir managed by the Army Corps of Engineers that serves as its centerpiece.
What makes Elk State Park genuinely special is its proximity to the Elk Country Visitor Center and the largest free-roaming elk herd in the northeastern United States. Every autumn, hundreds of elk gather in the surrounding valleys for the rut, and the bugles of bull elk echo through the mountains — a sight and sound most people associate with the Rocky West, not Pennsylvania.
The lake draws anglers after walleye, muskellunge, and smallmouth bass, while its quiet coves are ideal for kayaking and canoeing. Surrounding forests offer miles of hiking and cross-country skiing trails through hardwood and hemlock stands. Hunting is permitted in designated areas during season. Picnic pavilions and a swimming beach round out the warm-weather amenities.
Fall is the standout season here. The elk viewing peaks from mid-September through October, and the Allegheny Plateau erupts in color. Summer brings reliable lake recreation, while winter offers a stark, quiet beauty along snow-covered trails.
Elk State Park rewards visitors who appreciate wildness over polish. There are no manicured attractions — just deep forest, big water, and the rare chance to watch 700-pound elk graze at dusk in Pennsylvania’s most untamed corner.
