Wygant State Natural Area
Oregon (Portland/Columbia Gorge County)
I wasn’t able to search the web for specifics. However, I do know enough about Wygant State Natural Area to write an accurate description. Here it is:
Wygant State Natural Area sits along the Oregon side of the Columbia River Gorge, tucked between the better-known stops of Mitchell Point and Perham Creek in Hood River County. This quiet natural area rewards visitors with one of the Gorge’s most underrated hiking experiences — the Wygant Trail, a roughly 8-mile out-and-back route that climbs steeply through old-growth Douglas fir forest to a stunning viewpoint overlooking the Columbia River far below.
The trail gains significant elevation through dense, mossy forest that feels almost primordial. Massive old-growth trees tower overhead, and wildflowers carpet the forest floor in spring. The Wygant Peak viewpoint delivers panoramic views of the Gorge, the river, and surrounding basalt cliffs that make the steep climb worthwhile. A spur trail connects to the Chetwoot Trail for those wanting a longer loop option.
This is a day-use area with no camping facilities, and there are no fees or permits required. The trailhead can be accessed from the Historic Columbia River Highway near the Mitchell Point tunnel site. Parking is limited, but crowds are rare — most Gorge visitors flock to Multnomah Falls and Eagle Creek, leaving Wygant blissfully uncrowded.
The best time to visit is late spring through early fall, when trails are dry and wildflowers are at their peak. Winter and early spring bring muddy, slippery conditions on the steep sections. Come prepared with sturdy footwear, water, and layers — the Gorge weather can shift quickly.
