Willamette Mission State Park
Oregon (Willamette Valley County)
Willamette Mission State Park sits along the Willamette River north of Salem, occupying a stretch of fertile bottomland where Methodist missionary Jason Lee established Oregon’s first mission in 1834. That history gives the park its name, but the real draw is the landscape — towering black cottonwoods, open meadows, and quiet river frontage that feels a world away from the I-5 corridor just minutes east.
The park is home to the world’s largest black cottonwood tree, a massive specimen worth seeking out on the short loop trail that leads to it. Walnut orchards planted in the early 20th century still stand throughout the grounds, giving the park a pastoral character unlike most Oregon state parks. A network of paved and unpaved trails winds through wetlands and forest, popular with cyclists, joggers, and horseback riders. The Wheatland Ferry, one of three remaining cable ferries on the Willamette, operates adjacent to the park and offers a fun side trip across the river.
Fishing and kayaking on the Willamette are popular warm-weather activities, and birdwatchers will find great blue herons, ospreys, and migratory waterfowl along the river channels. The park offers a group camping area but no individual tent or RV sites, so plan accordingly if you’re looking to stay overnight.
Visit from late spring through early fall for the best weather. Summer days are warm and long, perfect for picnicking under the walnut canopy. Winter brings gray skies and soggy trails, but also solitude and excellent birding.
