Sunset Beach State Recreation Site sits along Oregon’s North Coast, offering one of the most accessible stretches of sandy shoreline in the region. The beach faces due west, making it one of the best spots on the coast for watching the sun drop into the Pacific — the name isn’t just marketing.

The wide, flat beach is popular for kite flying, beachcombing, and long walks along the surf line. Driftwood collects in impressive tangles near the dunes, and during low tide, you can explore shallow tide pools along the rockier sections to the south. The site also serves as a popular launch point for clamming expeditions on Clatsop Beach, particularly for razor clams during open seasons (check ODFW regulations before you dig).

The recreation site is a day-use area with no camping on-site. For overnight stays, Fort Stevens State Park is just a short drive north and offers full-hookup RV sites, tent camping, yurts, and cabins — one of the largest campgrounds on the Oregon coast.

Summer brings the warmest weather and biggest crowds, but fall is arguably the best season to visit. Temperatures stay mild through October, fog burns off earlier in the day, and you’ll have far more beach to yourself. Winter storms draw their own audience — dramatic wave action and moody skies make for memorable photography.

Bring layers regardless of season. Even on sunny days, coastal winds can drop the perceived temperature quickly. Dogs are welcome but must be leashed.
