Maud Williamson State Recreation Site
Oregon (Willamette Valley County)
Tucked along the North Santiam Highway in Oregon’s Willamette Valley, Maud Williamson State Recreation Site offers a quiet retreat beneath some of the region’s most impressive old-growth trees. This small day-use park packs an outsized punch for anyone seeking a peaceful stop surrounded by towering Douglas firs and a lush, fern-carpeted forest floor.
Named for a local landowner who donated the property to the state, Maud Williamson feels like a hidden pocket of the Pacific Northwest that time forgot. The old-growth grove here is the main draw — massive conifers stretch overhead, filtering sunlight into soft, green-tinted columns that make even a short walk feel restorative. A gentle trail loops through the property, perfect for stretching your legs or letting kids explore.
The site works well as a picnic destination, with tables scattered beneath the canopy. It’s an ideal lunch stop if you’re traveling the North Santiam corridor toward Detroit Lake or the Cascade Range. Birdwatchers will appreciate the mix of woodland species drawn to the mature forest habitat.
Note that this is a day-use only site — no camping is available here. For overnight stays, nearby options along the North Santiam River and around Detroit Lake provide plenty of choices.
The best time to visit is late spring through early fall, when the valley weather is mild and the forest canopy is at its most vibrant. Even on a gray winter day, though, the old-growth grove carries a moody beauty that rewards the stop.
