Benson State Recreation Area
Tucked along the southern shore of the Columbia River in the heart of the Columbia River Gorge, Benson State Recreation Area offers one of the most scenic day-use spots in northern Oregon. The park sits on a stretch of calm, lake-like water created by Bradford Island and Bonneville Dam, making it a standout destination for swimming, fishing, and non-motorized boating — without the strong currents that define much of the Gorge.
Wide, shaded lawns slope down to the waterfront, giving families plenty of room to spread out for picnics. A boat ramp provides easy access to the water for kayaks and canoes, while anglers cast for walleye, bass, and sturgeon from the rocky shoreline. A disc golf course winds through the park’s mature trees, adding a fun reason to linger.
Benson is a day-use area only — no overnight camping is available here. For campers, nearby Ainsworth State Park and Eagle Creek Campground are just minutes down the Historic Columbia River Highway. The park does have restrooms, picnic shelters, and ample parking.
The best time to visit is late May through September, when warm weather makes swimming and paddling ideal. Spring and fall bring fewer crowds and beautiful foliage along the Gorge walls. Even on a quick stop between Portland and Hood River, the combination of calm water, towering basalt cliffs, and Gorge winds makes Benson a refreshing break from the highway — and far more peaceful than many better-known Gorge parks.
