Jackson Lake State Park
Ohio (Jackson County)
Tucked into the rolling hills of Jackson County in southeastern Ohio, Jackson Lake State Park offers 349 acres of Appalachian foothills scenery centered around a quiet, wooded lake. This is a park built for slowing down — the kind of place where a canoe glide across still water at dawn feels like the main event.
The lake itself is the centerpiece, drawing anglers after largemouth bass, bluegill, and channel catfish. A public boat ramp accommodates small watercraft (electric motors only), keeping the water calm and the atmosphere peaceful. Kayaking and canoeing are popular ways to explore the shoreline, where herons and kingfishers are regular company.
On land, hiking trails wind through mixed hardwood forests that put on a serious show during autumn — oak, hickory, and maple paint the hillsides in deep reds and golds from mid-October through early November. Spring wildflower displays along the forest floor are equally rewarding for those willing to look closely.
Swimming is available at a designated beach area during summer months, making it a solid family destination from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Picnic shelters and open green spaces round out the day-use offerings.
Whether camping is available on-site may vary by season, so check with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources before planning an overnight trip. Nearby state forests offer additional backcountry options if you want to extend your stay.
Visit in fall for peak color, summer for water access, or spring for solitude. Jackson Lake rewards those who prefer their parks unhurried and uncrowded.
