Findley State Park

Nestled in the rolling hills of Lorain County, Findley State Park offers 931 acres of wooded terrain centered around a 93-acre lake that serves as the heart of the park. Originally developed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, the park carries a sense of history in its stone shelters and hand-built trails that wind through second-growth forests of beech, maple, and oak.

The lake draws anglers year-round, with bass, bluegill, and channel catfish among the most common catches. A public boat launch accommodates small watercraft with electric motors, and a swimming beach opens during summer months for families looking to cool off. Paddlers will find the calm, no-wake waters ideal for kayaking and canoeing at a relaxed pace.

On land, roughly 10 miles of trails loop through hardwood forests and wetland areas, suitable for hiking, mountain biking, and cross-country skiing when winter snow cooperates. Birders appreciate the park’s mix of habitats, which attract warblers, woodpeckers, and herons throughout the seasons.

The campground provides a solid base for overnight stays, with both electric and non-electric sites tucked among the trees. Reservations are recommended during summer weekends, when the park sees its heaviest use.

Spring and fall are arguably the best times to visit — wildflower displays brighten the forest floor in April and May, while October transforms the canopy into a showcase of autumn color. Even on busy weekends, the park’s winding trails offer pockets of genuine solitude.
