Buckeye Lake State Park
Ohio (Fairfield, Perry County)
Buckeye Lake State Park sits along the shores of Ohio’s oldest inland reservoir, a 3,100-acre lake that has drawn visitors since the canal era of the 1820s. Spanning 3,349 acres across Fairfield and Perry counties, this state park offers a distinctly Midwestern lake experience — unhurried, family-friendly, and surprisingly rich in both recreation and history.
The lake itself is the main attraction. Boating dominates the warm months, with public launch ramps providing easy access for powerboats, pontoons, and kayaks alike. Fishing is productive year-round, with anglers targeting largemouth bass, saugeye, crappie, and channel catfish. In winter, ice fishing draws a dedicated crowd when conditions allow.
Beyond the water, the park’s shoreline trails are ideal for walking and birdwatching. The Cranberry Bog State Nature Preserve, a rare floating sphagnum bog located within the lake, is one of Ohio’s most unusual natural features — a remnant of the last ice age that supports plant species typically found much farther north.
The surrounding village of Buckeye Lake adds to the appeal, with lakeside restaurants, ice cream shops, and a boardwalk that comes alive on summer weekends. It has the feel of a small-town resort community that hasn’t been overly polished.
Late spring through early fall is the best window for visiting, with July and August offering the warmest water temperatures for swimming and watersports. Weekdays tend to be significantly quieter than weekends, especially around the Fourth of July.
