New River State Park
North Carolina (Mountains County)
New River State Park stretches across 3,323 acres in the mountains of North Carolina, following the ancient New River — one of the oldest rivers in North America, estimated at over 300 million years old. Established in 1975, the park protects a scenic corridor of this designated American Heritage River as it winds through the Blue Ridge foothills.
The New River defines the experience here. Canoeing and kayaking are the main draws, with calm Class I and II waters that suit beginners and families. The park offers canoe access points and a put-in at the main entrance, making it easy to plan half-day or full-day float trips through wooded valleys and gentle farmland. Fishing for smallmouth bass, rock bass, and bluegill is productive along the river’s rocky shoals and deeper pools.
On land, hiking and mountain biking trails follow the riverbank and climb into surrounding hardwood forests. The park’s relative quiet — fewer crowds than destinations like Grandfather Mountain or Linville Falls — makes it a strong pick for birdwatching and wildlife observation, particularly during spring and fall migrations.
Visit in late September through mid-October for peak fall color reflected on the water, or in late spring when mountain laurel blooms along the banks. Summer weekends bring tubers and paddlers, but weekday visits remain peaceful.
The park sits in a rural, unhurried corner of Ashe and Alleghany counties — a genuine mountain retreat without the tourist infrastructure of more developed areas nearby.
