Big Horse Creek Scenic Byway
North Carolina
Tucked into the rugged highlands of western North Carolina, the Big Horse Creek Scenic Byway winds through some of the most unspoiled mountain scenery in the southern Appalachians. This state-designated scenic route follows the course of Big Horse Creek through a narrow valley framed by steep, forested ridges and weathered rock outcroppings that speak to the ancient geology of the Blue Ridge.
Along the drive, travelers pass through quiet rural communities where split-rail fences line the road and heritage farmsteads dot the hillsides. The creek itself is a constant companion, tumbling over mossy boulders and pooling in shaded hollows that invite a roadside stop. Wildflower meadows brighten the shoulders in spring, while autumn transforms the surrounding hardwood forests into a spectacular tapestry of gold, crimson, and amber.
Birders and wildlife watchers should keep eyes open for wild turkey, white-tailed deer, and the occasional black bear. Several informal pulloffs offer access to fishing spots and short creekside walks.
The best time to drive is mid-October for peak fall color or late April through May for wildflowers and rushing water. Allow one to two hours to enjoy the route at a leisurely pace with stops along the way.
