Fort Fisher State Recreation Area
North Carolina (Coast County)
Fort Fisher State Recreation Area sits at the southern tip of Pleasure Island along North Carolina’s coast, where the Cape Fear River meets the Atlantic Ocean. Established in 1986, this stretch of undeveloped beach offers something increasingly rare on the Carolina coast — miles of shoreline without high-rises, boardwalks, or commercial development.
The recreation area anchors one of the most ecologically rich corridors on the southern coast. The Basin Trail winds through coastal marsh and live oak maritime forest, offering some of the best birding in the region — migrating raptors, shorebirds, and wading species draw serious birders year-round. The beach itself runs for several miles, wide and uncrowded even in peak season, making it a favorite for surf fishing, shelling, and simply walking without dodging umbrella clusters.
Four-wheel-drive vehicles are permitted on designated stretches of beach with a permit, giving anglers access to remote fishing spots along the inlet. Kayakers and paddleboarders find calm launch points on the river side, while the ocean side delivers solid surf.
The recreation area sits adjacent to the Fort Fisher State Historic Site and the North Carolina Aquarium, making it easy to pair a beach day with Civil War history or marine exhibits.
Spring and fall deliver the most comfortable conditions — warm enough for the beach, cool enough for the trails, and prime timing for bird migration. Summer brings heat and crowds, though far fewer than neighboring Carolina Beach.
