Elk Knob State Park
North Carolina (Mountains County)
Rising to 5,520 feet in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, Elk Knob State Park protects 4,423 acres of one of the most ecologically significant high-elevation peaks in the southern Appalachians. Established in 2002, the park preserves a rare amphibolite mountain ecosystem — a geological distinction shared by only a handful of peaks in the region — supporting plant communities found nowhere else in the state.
The centerpiece hike is the Summit Trail, a moderately strenuous 1.9-mile climb through northern hardwood forests of yellow birch and American beech to a panoramic summit offering sweeping views into Tennessee and Virginia. In late spring, the understory erupts with wildflowers, including several species unique to amphibolite soils. The Backcountry Trail extends deeper into the park for those seeking solitude, winding through dense rhododendron tunnels and across clear mountain streams.
Beyond hiking, visitors come for mountain biking on designated trails, birding for high-elevation species like the black-throated blue warbler, and picnicking at sheltered sites near the trailhead. Winter brings occasional snowfall that transforms the summit into a quiet, frost-covered landscape worth the climb.
Camping availability should be confirmed directly with the park, as facilities have evolved since its early years as a more rustic destination.
The best time to visit is mid-May through October — spring for wildflowers, summer for cool mountain temperatures that run 10-15 degrees below the piedmont, and fall for some of the earliest autumn color in North Carolina. Arrive early on weekend mornings, as the small parking area fills quickly during peak season.
