Overview Located in the Neuse River Recreation Area in eastern North Carolina, Flanners Beach Campground is situated on a bluff overlooking the scenic Neuse River and within a half-hour drive from the Atlantic Ocean and Intracoastal Waterway. The campground is extreemly busy and reservations are reccamended but must be made 3 days in advance. Of the 39 campsites, 7 are considered first come-first served campsites that cannot be reserved or held, so a person must physically be there

Tucked along the Cape Fear River on the North Carolina coast, Carolina Beach State Park packs remarkable ecological diversity into its 761 acres. Established in 1969, this coastal gem is best known for its carnivorous plants — including the Venus flytrap, which grows wild in only a narrow band around Wilmington. The Flytrap Trail offers a short, fascinating loop through the boggy habitat where these plants thrive alongside sundews and pitcher plants.

Beyond the botanical curiosities, the park features several miles of hiking trails winding through longleaf pine forests, coastal scrub, and tidal marshes. Paddlers can launch kayaks and canoes into the Cape Fear River or explore Snow’s Cut, the canal connecting the river to the Intracoastal Waterway. Fishing is popular along the river and at the park marina, where anglers cast for flounder, red drum, and spotted seatrout.

The park sits just minutes from the town of Carolina Beach, making it easy to pair a day on the trails with an evening on the boardwalk. Birdwatchers will find the marsh edges productive for spotting herons, osprey, and painted buntings during warmer months.

Spring and fall deliver the most comfortable conditions — mild temperatures, fewer crowds, and peak wildflower displays. Summers are warm and humid but rewarding for water-based activities. Winter visits are quiet and pleasant for hiking.
