Perched on the dramatic bluffs of Montauk at the eastern tip of Long Island, Shadmoor State Park packs remarkable natural diversity into its 66 acres. Established in 2000 to preserve one of the last undeveloped stretches of the South Fork coastline, the park protects rare coastal habitats that most visitors to the Hamptons never discover.

Two concrete military bunkers from World War II sit partially hidden among the vegetation, remnants of the coastal defense network that once watched for German submarines. These weathered structures give the park an unexpected layer of history that pairs well with its wild, windswept character.

The park’s trail system winds through maritime grasslands, thickets of shadbush and bayberry, and freshwater wetlands before arriving at the bluffs overlooking the Atlantic. The ocean views from the clifftop are striking — waves crash against the rocky shoreline far below, and on clear days the horizon stretches endlessly. Birders will find the mix of coastal scrub and wetland habitat productive for spotting migrating songbirds and raptors, particularly during fall migration.

Camping is not available at Shadmoor, but nearby Hither Hills State Park offers oceanfront campsites for those looking to extend their stay.

The best time to visit is late spring through early fall, when the wildflowers are blooming and the trails are dry. Autumn brings fewer crowds and excellent birding. Summer weekends in Montauk get busy, so arriving early is worth the effort.

Bring sturdy shoes — the bluff trails can be uneven — and a camera. The views earn it.
