Tucked into the rolling hills of Central New York, Robert V. Riddell State Park offers 2,322 acres of quiet woodland and open meadow that feel genuinely untouched. Established in 2005, it’s one of New York’s newer state parks, which means it hasn’t yet landed on most visitors’ radar — and that’s a big part of its appeal.

The park’s terrain is defined by mixed hardwood forests, gentle ridgelines, and wide meadows that shift dramatically with the seasons. Hiking trails wind through the property at a relaxed grade, making them accessible for families and casual walkers while still offering enough distance to satisfy anyone looking for a full afternoon outdoors. Birdwatching is particularly rewarding here — the mix of forest edge and open grassland draws a wide variety of species, especially during spring and fall migration.

Hunting is permitted in designated areas during season, and the park sees steady use from cross-country skiers and snowshoers once winter settles in. Mountain biking and horseback riding are also available on select trails.

Camping availability has not been confirmed, so check with New York State Parks directly before planning an overnight trip.

The best time to visit is mid-September through late October, when the hardwoods put on a serious color display and the trails are cool and dry. Summer is pleasant but can be buggy in the meadow areas, so bring repellent.
