Hudson River Park
New York (New York City County)
Stretching 550 acres along Manhattan’s western edge, Hudson River Park is a ribbon of green that transformed New York City’s neglected waterfront into one of the most vibrant urban parks in America. Established in 1998, this state park runs nearly five miles from Battery Park City to 59th Street, offering stunning views of the Hudson River, the Statue of Liberty, and the New Jersey Palisades.
What makes Hudson River Park remarkable is how it weaves nature into the fabric of the city. The park’s piers have been reimagined as distinct destinations — Pier 26 features a tide deck and native plantings, Pier 25 offers mini golf and beach volleyball, and Pier 45 draws sunbathers and birdwatchers to its expansive lawn. Kayakers launch for free from several locations during summer months, paddling the same waters where cargo ships once docked.
Cyclists and runners share a dedicated greenway that connects to a 750-mile route stretching to Albany. Skateboarders flock to the renowned Chelsea Piers complex, while families gravitate toward the imaginative playgrounds scattered along the route. Seasonal programming includes outdoor fitness classes, movie nights, and environmental education at the park’s Estuarium.
Spring through fall delivers the best experience, with warm-weather months unlocking water sports and the fullest event calendar. Winter walks along the waterfront offer their own quiet appeal, especially at sunset.
There is no camping within the park. Hudson River Park is a daytime destination — but one that proves 550 acres of waterfront can rival any wilderness for wonder.
