Franklin D. Roosevelt Four Freedoms Park

Perched at the southern tip of Roosevelt Island, this striking four-acre state park is one of New York City’s most powerful yet overlooked landmarks. Designed by legendary architect Louis I. Kahn as one of his final works, the park was decades in the making — conceived in 1973 but not completed until 2012. The result is a masterpiece of modernist landscape architecture that feels worlds away from Manhattan, even though midtown’s skyline towers just across the East River.

The park is built around FDR’s famous 1941 “Four Freedoms” speech — freedom of speech, freedom of worship, freedom from want, and freedom from fear. A grand alley of linden trees leads visitors along a gently sloping granite plaza toward the Room, a roofless chamber at the island’s point where a bronze bust of Roosevelt gazes out over the United Nations headquarters. The intentional geometry and open sightlines create a meditative atmosphere that’s rare anywhere in the city, let alone in the middle of it.

Activities here center on walking, reflection, and photography — the views of the East River, Brooklyn, Queens, and Manhattan are exceptional from every angle. There’s no camping, but picnicking on the surrounding lawns is welcome. Spring and fall offer the most comfortable weather and softer light for photos, though summer sunsets from the tip are unforgettable.

Reach the park via the Roosevelt Island Tramway from Manhattan — itself a memorable experience — or the F train. Free admission makes this an easy, rewarding detour from any NYC itinerary.
