Connetquot River State Park Preserve
New York (Long Island County)
Tucked away on Long Island’s south shore, Connetquot River State Park Preserve offers 3,473 acres of protected wilderness that feels worlds apart from the surrounding suburbs. Established in 1973, this former private sportsmen’s club has been carefully maintained as one of New York’s finest nature preserves, centered around the spring-fed Connetquot River and its thriving trout population.
The park is best known for its fly fishing, with the crystal-clear Connetquot River drawing anglers from across the region for catch-and-release trout fishing by permit. Beyond the water, over 50 miles of trails wind through pine barrens, oak forests, and open meadows — ideal for hiking, horseback riding, and cross-country skiing when winter blankets the landscape. Birdwatchers will find the preserve particularly rewarding, as ospreys, great blue herons, and dozens of songbird species call the varied habitats home.
Because the park operates as a preserve, access requires a permit, and visitor numbers are intentionally limited to protect the ecosystems. This means quieter trails and a more immersive experience than most Long Island parks can offer. There are no camping facilities on-site, so plan your visit as a day trip.
Spring and fall deliver the best conditions — comfortable temperatures, peak wildlife activity, and fewer crowds. Summer brings lush canopy cover along shaded trails, while winter transforms the preserve into a serene snowscape perfect for Nordic skiing.
Connetquot is Long Island’s reminder that genuine wilderness still exists just an hour from Manhattan.
