Villanueva State Park sits tucked into a dramatic red sandstone canyon carved by the Pecos River in San Miguel County, New Mexico. Spanning 1,600 acres of rugged terrain along the river’s course, this park rewards visitors with striking geology, quiet trails, and some of the best warm-water fishing in northern New Mexico.

The Pecos River is the main draw. Anglers cast for catfish, bass, and the occasional trout in pools shaded by towering canyon walls streaked in rust and cream. The river also offers calm stretches suitable for wading and cooling off during summer months. Two short hiking trails — the Canyon Trail and the Viewpoint Trail — climb through piñon-juniper woodland to overlooks where the full scale of the sandstone formations reveals itself.

The park’s campground offers developed sites with shelters, picnic tables, and restrooms along the riverbank, making it a solid base for a weekend trip.
