Tucked into the Sangre de Cristo Mountains just eight miles northeast of the Santa Fe Plaza, Hyde Memorial State Park offers a forested mountain escape that feels worlds away from the high desert below. Sitting at roughly 8,500 feet elevation, this 350-acre park is one of New Mexico’s most accessible alpine retreats, drawing hikers, campers, and winter visitors year-round.

The park serves as a popular basecamp for exploring the surrounding Santa Fe National Forest. Trails wind through dense stands of ponderosa pine, aspen, and spruce, with several routes connecting to longer backcountry paths leading toward the Santa Fe Ski Basin. The moderate Loop Trail is a favorite for families, while more ambitious hikers can link up with the Borrego and Winsor trails for full-day outings into the Pecos Wilderness.

Camping here is a genuine highlight. Sites are shaded, well-spaced, and surprisingly peaceful given the proximity to town. Both developed and primitive options are available, and the cool mountain air makes summer camping especially comfortable when the rest of New Mexico swelters.

Winter brings cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and sledding to the upper meadows, making Hyde one of the few state parks that truly shines in every season. Fall is arguably the most spectacular time to visit, when the aspen groves ignite in gold against dark evergreen ridgelines.

Come prepared for mountain weather — temperatures can drop sharply after sunset, even in July. Pack layers, bring plenty of water, and enjoy one of the Southwest’s most rewarding roadside parks.
