Caballo Lake State Park sits along the Rio Grande in Sierra County, New Mexico, where the Chihuahuan Desert meets the Caballo Mountains. The park’s 5,384 acres wrap around Caballo Reservoir, a warm-water lake that draws anglers year-round for largemouth and white bass, walleye, crappie, and catfish. Spring and fall runs can be especially productive when the water temps shift.

Beyond fishing, the lake is popular for boating, kayaking, and waterskiing when water levels cooperate. Hiking trails wind through the rocky desert terrain east of the lake, where you’ll find cactus, creosote, and occasional mule deer. The landscape is stark and open — sunsets here are worth planning around.

The best time to visit is October through April, when daytime temperatures hover in the 50s to 70s. Summer heat regularly pushes past 100 degrees, which thins the crowds but tests your tolerance. If you’re heading between Truth or Consequences and Las Cruces on I-25, Caballo Lake is a worthwhile stop or overnight base.
