Lake Valley Historic Townsite preserves the remnants of an 1878 silver mining boomtown that once housed 4,000 residents in southwestern New Mexico. Managed by the Bureau of Land Management, this ghost town offers a unique blend of history and high desert exploration.

Visitors can walk among stabilized historic structures, including a restored schoolhouse and chapel that provide insight into frontier life. Hiking trails wind through the townsite and surrounding terrain, making this an excellent stop for those interested in combining history with light outdoor activity. Wildlife viewing opportunities exist throughout the area, particularly in early morning and evening hours.

The site has basic facilities including picnic areas but no developed campgrounds. Dispersed camping is permitted on adjacent BLM lands—check current regulations at the Las Cruces District Office. Access is via Highway 27, approximately 17 miles south of Hillsboro on a paved road.

Spring and fall offer the most comfortable temperatures for exploring, as summer heat can be intense in this arid landscape. Plan for self-sufficiency with water, as no potable sources exist on-site.
