Wallace House in Somerville, New Jersey, is a Revolutionary War treasure hiding in plain sight. This Georgian-style mansion served as General George Washington’s headquarters during the winter encampment of 1778–1779, when the Continental Army was stationed at nearby Camp Middlebrook. It was here that Washington planned strategy, received foreign dignitaries, and weathered one of the war’s most critical periods alongside his wife Martha.
Built in 1776 by Philadelphia merchant John Wallace, the house was one of the finest homes in the region at the time — which is precisely why it was chosen for the Commander-in-Chief. Today visitors can tour the restored interior, furnished with period pieces that reflect the life Washington and his officers would have known during those pivotal months.
Just steps away sits the Old Dutch Parsonage, built in 1751, which housed Reverend Jacob Hardenbergh — a patriot minister and founder of what became Rutgers University. The two buildings together tell a layered story of colonial life, faith, and revolution in central New Jersey.
Guided tours are typically available Wednesday through Sunday, and the grounds are pleasant for a quiet stroll. Spring and fall offer the most comfortable visiting conditions, with fewer crowds than summer. There’s no camping on-site, but the experience pairs well with a day exploring Somerset County’s other historic sites and parks.
Plan for about an hour to tour both buildings. Admission is free, making Wallace House one of New Jersey’s best-kept historical experiences.
