Tall Pines State Preserve

Tucked between Deptford and Mantua Townships in Gloucester County, Tall Pines State Preserve protects 110 acres of mature upland forest in one of southern New Jersey’s most developed corridors. Walking trails wind through groves of pitch pine and oak, and the understory supports a mix of native shrubs and wildflowers that shift with the seasons. Birders will find the canopy active with warblers in spring and woodpeckers year-round, while the forest floor draws box turtles and the occasional red fox. The flat terrain makes trails accessible for most fitness levels, and the relatively compact acreage means you can loop the preserve in an hour or two without rushing. There are no developed campgrounds on-site, so plan accordingly if you’re looking for an overnight stay — nearby Parvin State Park offers full camping facilities about 30 miles south.

Visit in mid-autumn when the hardwood canopy turns and the trails are carpeted in gold, or in late spring when migrating songbirds fill the pines. Summer brings thick canopy shade that keeps the forest noticeably cooler than the surrounding sprawl.
