Rising 171 feet above Atlantic City’s inlet, Absecon Lighthouse is New Jersey‘s tallest lighthouse and one of the oldest in the country. Built in 1857 under the direction of Lieutenant George Meade — who would later command Union forces at Gettysburg — this brick-and-iron tower has guided mariners safely past the treacherous shoals off Absecon Island for more than 160 years.
Climbing the 228 steps to the top rewards visitors with sweeping panoramic views of the Atlantic City skyline, the coastline stretching toward Brigantine, and the vast Atlantic Ocean. On clear days, visibility extends for miles, making the climb worth every step. The original first-order Fresnel lens, a masterwork of 19th-century optics, is on display at the base and remains one of the most impressive examples of lighthouse engineering on the East Coast.
The surrounding grounds include a restored Keeper’s House, now a museum filled with maritime artifacts, historical photographs, and exhibits on coastal life in early Atlantic City. A replica oil house rounds out the small but well-curated site.
Absecon Lighthouse sits just minutes from the Boardwalk, making it an easy half-day addition to any Atlantic City visit. Spring through early fall offers the best conditions for climbing — the tower can close during inclement weather. Budget about an hour to explore the museum and make the ascent.
There’s no camping on-site, but nearby Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge and several state campgrounds offer options within a short drive.
