Umbagog Lake State Park
New Hampshire (Coös County)
Tucked into the remote northern reaches of Coös County, Umbagog Lake State Park sits on the shores of Lake Umbagog, one of New England’s most pristine and undeveloped bodies of water. At 136 acres, the park itself is compact, but it serves as a gateway to the surrounding 7,500-acre Umbagog National Wildlife Refuge — a sprawling wilderness where moose, loons, bald eagles, and osprey are regular sights rather than rare treats.
Paddling is the main draw here. The lake’s shallow, marshy coves and winding inlets make it exceptional for kayaking and canoeing, with wildlife encounters almost guaranteed on early morning paddles. Anglers will find healthy populations of bass, pickerel, and landlocked salmon. Hiking trails wind through mixed hardwood forests, and birdwatchers come specifically for the nesting bald eagles that have made a strong comeback in this corridor.
The park offers both traditional tent sites and remote, boat-access-only campsites along the lakeshore — a setup that rewards those willing to paddle for their solitude. Facilities are deliberately rustic, keeping the focus on the natural surroundings rather than resort-style comfort.
Late June through September is the prime window, though be prepared for black flies in early summer. Fall brings spectacular foliage with a fraction of the crowds found at parks farther south. Winter access is limited.
Umbagog Lake State Park is for visitors who want wild New Hampshire — the kind of quiet, unhurried landscape that defined the state long before the tourist brochures arrived.
