Otter Brook Lake

Tucked into the rolling hills of Cheshire County, Otter Brook Lake is a compact but rewarding destination managed as a New Hampshire state park. At just 2.5 acres, this isn’t a sprawling wilderness — it’s an intimate spot where the water stays close and the woods press in around you, making it feel far more secluded than its size suggests.

The lake sits behind Otter Brook Dam, a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers flood control project on Otter Brook, a tributary of the Ashuelot River. The surrounding parkland offers a sandy swimming beach that draws families throughout the summer, along with picnic areas shaded by mixed hardwood and pine. A network of short trails winds through the adjacent forest, ideal for easy hikes or birdwatching — keep an eye out for kingfishers working the shoreline.

Fishing is a quiet highlight here. The lake supports populations of bass and panfish, and the small size means you can work the entire shoreline in an afternoon without a boat. Kayaks and canoes launch easily from the beach area, though motorboats aren’t practical on water this size.

The best time to visit is late June through early September, when the swimming area is staffed and the picnic facilities are fully open. Fall brings stunning foliage reflections off the water, though services wind down after Labor Day.

Otter Brook Lake won’t take your whole weekend — but paired with a drive through the Monadnock Region, it’s a perfect half-day stop worth building into your New Hampshire itinerary.
