John Wingate Weeks Historic Site
Perched atop Mount Prospect in Lancaster, the John Wingate Weeks Historic Site offers one of northern New Hampshire’s most rewarding panoramic views — a sweeping 360-degree vista spanning the Presidential Range, the Connecticut River Valley, and across the border into Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom. This 420-acre state park honors the legacy of John Wingate Weeks, the U.S. Senator and Secretary of War whose tireless advocacy led to the Weeks Act of 1911, the landmark legislation that created the Eastern national forest system and ultimately preserved the White Mountain National Forest.
The centerpiece is the stone fire tower on Mount Prospect’s summit, where visitors can climb for unobstructed views in every direction — arguably the best mountaintop panorama in Coös County that you can reach by car. The winding auto road to the summit is an experience in itself, passing through northern hardwood forest that erupts in color during fall foliage season, typically peaking in late September to early October.
On the grounds, the historic Weeks Estate lodge houses exhibits on the Senator’s life, the Weeks Act, and local natural history. Hiking trails wind through the property’s mixed forests, offering quieter routes to the summit for those who prefer to earn the view on foot. Picnic areas near the lodge make a perfect lunch stop.
Visit between mid-June and mid-October when the auto road and lodge are open. Fall is peak season — the combination of summit views and foliage is genuinely spectacular. Plan for at least an hour to explore the exhibits and soak in the scenery.
