Tiekel Road Grade follows an abandoned section of the original Richardson Highway along the Tiekel River in south-central Alaska. Managed by the Bureau of Land Management, this 3-mile corridor offers a mellow route for hiking and biking through riverside terrain. Access the southern trailhead at mile 47 of the Richardson Highway, just north of Rendezvous Lodge near Stuart Creek.

The route traces the riverbank on the old roadbed, making for easy walking or cycling on relatively flat ground. The northern end terminates at avalanche debris fields and becomes foot-traffic only. Anglers and paddlers use the trail to reach the Tiekel River.

As BLM land, dispersed camping is permitted along the corridor. Find flat spots near the river, but be aware of bear activity and practice proper food storage. No developed facilities exist on-site.

The best window for visiting runs from late May through September, after snowmelt clears the lower elevations. Earlier in the season, expect lingering snow and potential avalanche debris. Mosquitoes can be intense in June and July—bring head nets and repellent.
