The Geysers

The Geysers

California

The Geysers spans approximately 7,100 acres of BLM-managed public lands along the Lake County and Sonoma County border in Northern California. This rugged terrain features oak woodlands, chaparral, and the geological activity that gives the area its name—though the commercial geothermal operations are separate from the public recreation areas.

Visitors can explore the landscape through hiking and horseback riding on designated trails. Hunting is permitted in season with appropriate licenses. The terrain varies from rolling hills to steeper canyons, requiring moderate fitness for backcountry exploration.

Dispersed camping is allowed on BLM lands here, though visitors should check current fire restrictions before planning a trip, as this region frequently experiences fire danger during dry months. No developed campgrounds exist within the area, so pack in all water and supplies. Access is via rural roads from Highway 101 or Highway 29—high-clearance vehicles are recommended for some routes.

Spring and fall offer the most comfortable conditions. Summer brings intense heat, while winter rains can make unpaved roads impassable. Contact the Ukiah Field Office for current access conditions.
