Shale Butte Wilderness Study Area encompasses nearly 16,000 acres of rugged volcanic terrain in southern Idaho, managed by the Bureau of Land Management. The landscape features dramatic basalt formations, sagebrush steppe, and high desert valleys carved by ancient lava flows.

Dispersed camping is permitted throughout the WSA, giving visitors the freedom to establish primitive campsites away from developed areas. No facilities or designated campgrounds exist within the study area, so pack all water, supplies, and waste out with you. High-clearance vehicles are recommended for accessing remote trailheads, as roads can be rough and unmaintained.

Hiking and horseback riding trails wind through the volcanic buttes, offering solitude and expansive views across the Snake River Plain. The area supports mule deer, pronghorn, and upland game birds, making it a destination for hunters during open seasons. Wildlife photographers and birders will find excellent opportunities at dawn and dusk.

Spring and fall provide the most comfortable conditions, with moderate temperatures ideal for backcountry exploration. Summer brings intense heat, while winter access may be limited by snow at higher elevations.
