Needles Field Office (BLM)
The Needles Field Office manages over 1.4 million acres of BLM land in California‘s Mojave Desert, stretching from the Colorado River to rugged mountain ranges. This high-desert terrain offers dispersed camping throughout most public lands, with no permits required for stays up to 14 days. Popular areas include the Piute Mountains, Sacramento Mountains, and lands adjacent to the Mojave National Preserve.
Recreation opportunities include off-highway vehicle riding on designated routes, rock hounding, hiking, hunting, and exploring historic mining sites. The Colorado River corridor provides fishing and boating access. The terrain varies from sandy washes and creosote flats to rocky canyons and Joshua tree woodlands.
Access most areas via Interstate 40 or Highway 95, with secondary roads ranging from paved to rough 4WD tracks. Bring all supplies, as services are limited outside Needles and Lake Havasu City. Cell service is unreliable in remote areas.
Visit October through April to avoid extreme summer heat, when temperatures regularly exceed 110°F. Spring brings wildflower displays in good rainfall years. The field office in Needles provides maps and current road conditions.
