Bruneau Canyon Overlook
Idaho
Bruneau Canyon Overlook offers one of Idaho‘s most dramatic viewpoints—an 800-foot drop to the Bruneau River with the opposite rim standing 1,300 feet across. Managed by the Bureau of Land Management, this remote site in southwest Idaho provides access to a 60-mile canyon system carved through layers of basalt and rhyolite.
Hiking trails lead from the overlook along the canyon rim, with opportunities for wildlife viewing and photography of the Wild and Scenic Bruneau River below. The high-desert terrain and designated wilderness areas appeal to visitors seeking solitude and undeveloped landscapes. Interpretive programs help explain the volcanic and glacial forces that shaped this dramatic geology.
Dispersed camping is permitted on surrounding BLM land, making this an excellent basecamp for exploring the canyon country. No developed campgrounds exist at the overlook itself, so visitors should arrive prepared with water and supplies. Access roads are unpaved and may require high-clearance vehicles, particularly after wet weather.
Spring and fall offer the most comfortable temperatures for hiking and camping. Summer brings intense heat to this exposed desert landscape.
