Balanced Rock

Balanced Rock

Idaho

Balanced Rock, managed by the Bureau of Land Management, features one of Idaho‘s most striking geological formations—a 48-foot tall, 40-ton boulder perched impossibly on a pedestal just 3 feet by 17 inches wide. Located south of Buhl in the dramatic Salmon Falls Creek Canyon, this wind-sculpted marvel draws visitors year-round for photography and short explorations.

The adjacent Balanced Rock Park offers picnic facilities, making this an ideal day-use destination. The site provides a convenient stopping point when exploring the surrounding BLM lands, where dispersed camping opportunities exist on undeveloped public land in the broader canyon area. Visitors should verify current access conditions and camping regulations with the local BLM field office before planning overnight stays.

Access is via paved and gravel roads from Buhl, with the final approach suitable for most vehicles in dry conditions. Spring and fall offer the most comfortable temperatures for exploring the high desert terrain, while summer visits are best planned for early morning or evening hours.

Pack water and supplies, as services are limited in this remote corner of southern Idaho.
