Yellow Creek State Park

Nestled in the rolling hills of Indiana County, Yellow Creek State Park spans 3,140 acres of wooded terrain centered around the 720-acre Yellow Creek Lake. Established in 1963, the park has become a favorite destination for outdoor enthusiasts drawn to its blend of water recreation and Appalachian forest landscapes.

The lake is the park’s centerpiece, offering excellent fishing for bass, walleye, musky, and panfish throughout the season. Two public beaches provide swimming access during summer months, while boat launches accommodate motorboats (with a 20 HP limit) and non-powered watercraft. Kayaking and canoeing are particularly rewarding here, with quiet coves and wooded shorelines to explore.

On land, over 11 miles of trails wind through mature hardwood forests and open meadows, suitable for hiking, cross-country skiing, and wildlife observation. Birders will find the park especially productive — the diverse habitat supports over 200 documented species, and the lake draws migrating waterfowl each spring and fall.

Yellow Creek is well-suited for camping, with nearly 200 sites ranging from tent-only spots to full-hookup RV pads. Several rustic cabins are also available for those who prefer a roof overhead.

Summer brings the fullest range of activities, but autumn transforms the surrounding hills into a patchwork of color that rivals anywhere in western Pennsylvania. Winter visitors can enjoy ice fishing and cross-country skiing when conditions cooperate.

Located just 15 miles from Indiana, PA, Yellow Creek offers a genuine retreat without a long drive from Pittsburgh or other regional centers.
