Wolf Creek Inn State Heritage Site

Standing along the old stagecoach route between Sacramento and Portland, Wolf Creek Inn is the oldest continuously operating hotel in the Pacific Northwest. Built in 1883, this Southern Oregon landmark served weary travelers long before Interstate 5 carved through the canyon below — and it still welcomes guests today.

The inn’s biggest draw is its living history. Jack London slept here in 1911 and reportedly worked on Valley of the Moon in what’s now named the Jack London Room. The building itself is a beautifully preserved example of Classical Revival architecture, maintained by Oregon State Parks with period-appropriate furnishings that transport you to the late 1800s. You can walk through the parlor, dining room, and upstairs guest rooms on a self-guided tour, or book an overnight stay to experience the creaking floors and quiet charm firsthand.

Outside, the small grounds offer a peaceful place to stretch your legs, and the surrounding Rogue Valley provides easy access to hiking, fishing along the Rogue River, and exploring nearby gold rush-era towns like Jacksonville. The inn occasionally hosts special events and dinners worth checking the calendar for.

Spring through fall is the best window to visit, when the Rogue Valley greens up and temperatures sit comfortably in the 70s and 80s. Winter brings a quieter, moodier atmosphere — ideal if you want the inn mostly to yourself.

This isn’t a wilderness destination. It’s a step back in time, tucked just off the interstate but worlds away from it.
